R.A. Analysis- Speech (word count: 400)
"Remember Lot's Wife" by Jeffrey R. Holland
http://speeches.byu.edu/reader/reader.php?id=12522
1. Argument- It is better not to live in the past, because then you can look and live in the future.
2. Audience- BYU students
3. Goal- to get college students to not dwell on the hard things and have faith in the future
3. How?- Elder Holland uses a lot of pathos in his speech. He appeals to our side that always tries to do better, by telling us that we will live better if we let go of the past. He also appeals to the side that doesn't want to do the right thing, in telling us what consequences will happen if we remain stuck in the past. He tells us by living in the past we are not having faith. This makes us feel not just guilty, but wakes us up that we need to do better. That that simple act of looking to the future will show our faith in God more. He uses logos I believe just in the way he presents his talk, a very simple formula to be happy. Live in the past= sorrow. Live in the future= hope and happiness! He uses ethos by using examples from the old testament to illustrate his point and also he establishes ethos by the way he talks. Particularly in this talk, he spoke with firmness and authority. Because he is an apostle of God. He also uses pathos, by using the spirit when he talks, something that most BYU students can recognize and feel.
5. This talk was very effective. This devotional was given almost 3 years ago and I still remember it. It has been one of my favorites because he spoke with such authority on a subject that alot of students need to hear. There is so much change going on around us all the time in this stage of our life and we need to learn to go with it, have faith and make the best of it!
STAR
relevant- This topic was very relevant to the ever-changing lives college students live. We need a reminder to not let the bad or the hard things that have happened to us, get us down.
sufficient- he gives sufficient reasons why we should listen to him. He uses a personal example and scriptural examples. This makes his argument credible. Plus, he speaks with authority from God. Why wouldn't we believe what he tells us?

Painting of Broadway New York at night. (i'm going to try to post a picture of it, I have this painting)
1. Argument- You should go to New York because you will have the time of your life.
2. Most people, teenagers and up, and more so for those you recognize or enjoy theatre productions
3. How? this painting appeals to pathos most of all. It is FULL of bright colors. The streets seems to be glowing with red and yellow. This draws people attention to the painting and also depicts a lively night scene. The people in the picture are really small compared to the buildings and many posters. This shows how big and grand everything is in New York. This appeals to all the people who love to walk the streets of a big bustling city. The posters of different plays and musicals take up most of the painting, showing famous and recognizable productions. This would cause many to long to go there to see these famous productions. Especially for those people who have never been to New York. I think this painting shows ethos, authority, in showing all these famous plays. This is because all play productions come out of New York first and Broadway has first pick on what they want to produce. This just reminds its audience that Broadway is the best place to see any production.
4. Effective? I think this painting is effective in making its viewers want to go to New York. I have never been there myself and every time I look at this painting I long to be there. It catches viewers' emotions and makes them wish they were one of the people in the painting.
STAR
Sufficient- I think there is sufficient emotion and intrigue in this painting. The bright colors fill the entire painting and the whole thing is bursting with excitement. From this painting alone there is enough reason for anyone to want to go there!
Relevant- The painting can appeal to most people because everyone is either intrigued by an exciting night on the town, big buildings and bright lights, or the joy of seeing a musical.

Texting and Facebook: Convenience or Hindrance?
by: Emily Dance
1. Arugment- Texting and facebook will hinder personal relationships
2. Audience- young adults and teenagers who like to facebook and text
3. How? I believe I used alot of pathos in my counterarguments. This is because I addressed all the reasons why they love to text and facebook. This shows I care how they feel and recognize their side of the argument. I also use pathos to show them that too much facebook and texting can cause them more problems with their relationships which they definitely do not want. These problems including, confronting their friends, saying things they do not mean, misunderstandings. I think that I could have showed more pathos by telling them why face to face interaction is important to have in a relationship. What the value of it is. I used logos by using statistics showing them the numbers of how much people text and use facebook. I established ethos by quoting credible sources such as a psychologist and a journal dedicated to media psychology.
4. Effective?- I believe that my paper was effective in showing my audience how too much texting and facebook could hinder their relationships. I think that I should have established what too much texting and facebook was though. I think that I used a good tone for the paper that was casual and spunky, like my audience.
STAR
Sufficient- I think that there was a good balance of argument and evidence along with my counterarguments
Relevant- I used a tone that was casual to appeal to my audience. I also started and ended the paper referring to blogs and using "internet lingo" which they understand. Such as, screen names. I also used a personal example to connect to the audience and show them that I understand how they feel.
Typical- I think that the information I presented was relevant to my subject and was easy for the audience to understand. The statistics were basic and straight forward.
Accurate- I think my argument were fair because for almost all of my reasons, I showed the counterargument

~A nice woman trying to sell me and my cousin, Kaitlyn, a hand care and manicure kit~
1. Argument was that we NEEDED the hand care and manicure kit
2. Audience- Kaitlyn and I
3. Goal- to get Kaitlyn and I to buy the hand care and manicure kit
4. How? She was very good. She used a lot of pathos to grab our attention and keep us there to start off. She said, "come here, i want to show you something" with a huge likable smile on her face and friendly gesture. She was hard to resist because she seemed genuinely excited about what she wanted to show us. So we went over. She gave each of us this lotion scrub to put on our hands as she explained the benefits of this product on dry skin. This technique of actually letting us use the product is a mix of pathos, because it makes us feel good, trusted and liked. And logos because we are able to find out for ourselves right then if this product works. Which then leads to ethos, because it shows that they are confident in their product. In showing us the next part of the kit, the manicure part, she used me to demonstrate how to give yourself a french manicure. This again used pathos, logos and ethos. While doing so she asked us both about our lives- if we were students, what we did and how busy we were. She asked and acted with such interest which appealed to our pathos because we really felt like she cared about us. She exploded with giggles when she found out we were roommates and told us that we would have so much fun taking a break and doing this together. When she noticed our reluctance she said to us, "i'll tell you what, because you girls are so sweet and seem so busy i'll tell you what i'll do, ill give you one full price and the other, free". This appealed to our logos because this was a very good deal. And again to our pathos, because I felt like our new friend was giving us something special just for us.
5. Effective? This wonderful girl's tactics were quite good. She made us feel so good talking to her, in fact quite buddy buddy talking to her that we felt like she had our best interest in mind. She kept pushing like a good salesperson but appealed to our inner girl, with an attitude of "from one girl to another" or "us girls stick together". She even appealed to our "cheap college student" side by giving us a deal. The only reason I didn't buy it was because I didn't really need it and the cheap college student side took over.
STAR
1. Sufficient- There was definitely enough reason to buy this care kit. She not only convinced us of its credibility but of how the product would do us good in our busy stressful lives.
2. Relevant- this particular sales pitch would have been very different had this girl had a different audience and she played directly to what type of people we were- friendly girl college students.

RA Analysis- Music Video
R.A. Analysis- Music Video (Word Count: 362)
Here We Go Again- Ok Go
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJulhGUh8vU
1. The argument for this music video is that Ok Go is a very "cool" band. And cool meaning- hip, fun, quirky, likable and relate-able.
2. Audience- those who are fans of Ok Go, and those who will be shown this video by Ok Go fans
3. Goal- to get more fans
4. How? This music video is very unique. It never shows them singing only doing this creative "dance". I think that Ok Go appeals to the pathos of its audience because they are doing a dance that is unique, and difficult. It has the "wow" factor. They choreographed a dance on treadmills even though they are not dancers. This definitely ups there cool factor would attract many fans simply because this band has done something new and different. I think they build ethos by never showing themselves singing in the video because they assume you know that they are singing. It's the attitude of "yes we sing, you have heard us, now look what we can do." I do not think that this music video uses logos.
5. I believe this video is very affective as I was one of those people who was shown by someone else this music video. They were an Ok Go fan and wanted to show me this really cool music video. I am not into music videos but I watched it anyways and after wanted to check out their music. Funny enough, the fact that Ok Go has done something creative and fun with their music video attracts many young adults. This is simply because they just seem like a "cool" band.
STAR
1. Relevant- I think this music video connects to the audience very well because young adults always want to see the cool, the new, the different. This music video has all three.
2. Sufficient- There is definitely enough coolness in this music video to please its audience. In the dance they found so many different ways on dancing on a treadmill and it never gets old. There is potential to get repetitious with a treadmill, but they figured out ways to make the dance exciting to watch the whole way through

Living: Is Day Care Bad for Babies by Claudia Wallis
Time Magazine
R.A. Analysis (word count: 374)
1. The argument of this article is that there are changing views on whether or not daycare affects children. As time progresses more research is done that seems to lead to daycare having a negative affect.
2. Audience- parents who have children in daycare or are thinking about putting their children in daycare.
3. Goal- to get parents to look more into their daycare centers and if they really need to use daycare
4. How? The author uses logos most in this article. She gives statistics and research results from several decades about the affect of daycare. She shows how with each decade there seems to be more evidence leading to the fact that the mother is the most important caregiver. The author establishes ethos by quoting several psychologists, college professors and hospitals. She has gathered her information well. Pathos is used in some of the data given to appeal to parents concern for their child. An example is given that orphans babies who were given little attention or love from even their nurses, gave up on life essentially and stopped playing and eating. A parent would be quite disturbed by this finding.
5. Effective?- I think that this article is effective in informing parents of the many opinions on the matter and using reliable sources, but she does not have a clear stance on the matter. She ends the article as though she agrees with whatever the up to date research is. Each new generation different variables are added which vary the results. I think that this article could both inform and confuse parents. Although, I think this may be the objective of the article; so that parents will research and find out for themselves if daycare should be used rather than just trust one statistic.
STAR
1. Relevant- The author connects greatly to the audience, being parents, in that it gives many statistics of the affect daycare has on children. It gives a variety of statistics which parents like, because they always like to be thorough and have lots of opinions and resources when it comes to their children.
2. Accurate- The article is definitely fair in that it gives both sides of the argument and presents strong evidence on both sides.

RA Analysis- Film Trailer
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Trailer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Su1LOpjvdZ4
RA Analysis (word count: 442)
1. The argument for this Harry Potter trailer is that this movie, the last of the series, will be the best most epic one yet!
2. Audience- i think this trailer mostly targets die hard Harry Potter fans (like myself)
3. Goal- to get fans to come see the last Harry Potter movies
4. How?- First off, the trailer establishes a strong ethos with showing the movie making symbol, Warner Brothers, decorated "Harry Potter" like. Warner Brothers is a very popular and successful company and are proud to have Harry Potter tied to their name. The rest of the preview is all feeding fans' ethos. The whole trailer consists of short clips, no longer than 3 seconds. This draws the audience in and makes them focus deeply on the trailer. It flashes so many memorable and intense scenes which Harry Potter fans can recognize from the book. It shows nearly every character that Harry Potter fans love, even characters that haven't been seen for several movies, such as Dobby (the house elf). This gets the fans really excited. They also appeal to ethos when they play the famous Harry Potter theme music at the end and show the Harry Potter title. Harry Potter has been around for so long that the movie would not be without its entrancing music. This trailer does not use logos, which is perfectly fine, as their audience is deeply emotionally connected to Harry Potter.
5. This trailer is very effective because it pulls on every heart string of harry potter fans. Fans have been waiting and anticipating this movie for so long. In the trailer they show a lot of footage ranging over the whole book. Some might say this is giving away too much, but for this audience, who has read the book at least twice, they want to see what the movie is going to be like.
STAR
1. Relevant- definitely connected to the audience in giving them what they want to see. ALOT of exciting thrill packed scenes. The significance of showing alot of different scenes is because Harry Potter fans like it when the movie closely follows the book. The trailer shows enough parts from the book which reassures fans that the movie will include most of their beloved book.
2. Sufficient- this trailer seems to give the perfect amount of clues to what the movie is gonna be like. It is long and can show alot, and the clip segments are so short that some you have to watch over again to figure out what they were. This gets fans even more excited as they watch the trailer over and over again.

RA Analysis- Paper A Source
"Is Text Messaging Replacing Human Communication" by Steven Reynolds
http://ezinearticles.com/?Is-Text-Messaging-Replacing-Human-Communication?&id=2240884
R.A. Analysis (423 words)
1. Argument: The argument of this article is that texting damages teenagers ability to communicate with people in person. They would rather speak to others through texting them.
2. Audience: Adults who read Ezine articles who have teenagers. Although I do not think that the writer makes his audience very clear, I assume it is adults rather than the teenagers themselves because I do not believe teenagers would read articles from this article database website
3. Goal: To get parents to monitor their children's text usage
4. How?: I think that the author mainly uses pathos in this article. He reminds the audience of what grade school was once like for them. Reminding them of the days when they used to pass notes in class. They stress how teenagers these days have something much more sneaky they can do in class, and that is texting. Parents are usually concerned about their children's behavior in school. He also appeals to their protective parental instincts in telling how teenagers are more confident in texting and therefore people are more apt to bully or say rude and insulting remarks through texts. The writer uses logos a little by telling how everyone, young to old, has a cell phone. I think that he could definitely use more logos by throwing in statistics and numbers of how many people have cell phones and how often they use them. The writer does not use ethos really at all to me.
5. Effective?: I think the articles is a good start on getting people to think about how phones are being used and how texting can affect ones ability to communicate. Although I do not think that it is enough to convince anyone. There is not enough evidence to support his opinion. He should establish more ethos, or authority, by using more logos, as said before, with statistics and evidence to support his argument.
STAR
Sufficient- I do not think that this article holds sufficient means to hold up his argument. I do not think that there is enough evidence to back up his reasoning. He would not even need much more evidence because I do not think that the audience would need any fancy statistics to convince them, but just something to establish the writers credibility
Relevant- I think that this article is relevant to the audience because it tells of the progression of technology, connecting to the older generation and showing them that texting can easily be abused, more so than other/older electronics

1. Define Argument- The advertisement's argument is that people should buy the new Palm Centro because their life will be less stressful and more organized if they do.
2. Audience- Busy students or working adults.
3. Goal- Their goal is to get people to buy the new Palm Centro.
4- How?- I think they first use pathos to grab your attention with an image. A cool picture always captures the interest of people these days. They also appeal to your emotions of stress and anxiety using the words CHAOS associated with not having a Palm and ORDER associated with having a Palm. No one wants to be stressed. I think this same aspect of the advertisement appeals to your logic (logos) because it shows that it is better to have everything put in one spot, the Palm. I don't think that it really uses ethos very much except for the fact that it has a demanding and authoritative voice about using minimal words in the ad. At the bottom it the statement of "Organize your life with Palm" demands that this is the only way to get your life in order.
5. I think that this advertisement is effective because it is so simple and reminds busy people of how busy they really are! I think that this advertisement may not be effective for all busy people because it does not compare its product with others because there are so many other ways to organize yourself.
